TACLOBAN City
Tacloban City is situated in the North east side of Leyte.(As far as I know)It thrives on mercantilism, agriculture and fishery, wares that doesn't really make a city.Tacloban in the 18th century was a barrio of the Samar town called Basey.Legend has it that it got its name from fishermen catching crabs at Cancabato bay. They had this tool made of bamboo that traps crab . The act of using this crab catching gear was called "taklob" ,meaning to cover. So roughly we can be called as the covered city. The place really started to progress during the Filipino-American war.The place became a center of sorts for the Americans in their campaign against the pulahans(Filipino rebels who combined nationalism with religion). In the 1930s , one of the strongest typhoons ever, hit the whole province. Most of the "Casa"(storage buildings facing the sea) of chinese businessmen who were into the manila hemp(abaca) business were destroyed. After the storm, many of these businessmen decided to settle here in Tacloban. In 1945 Tacloban became the Philippines' capital while Mcarthur and the guerillas were still mopping up Japanese forces in Mindanao and Luzon.Tacloban was again prominent in the late 60s until the People's Power revolution happened. The city was known to be Imelda Marcos' home city.During those times Tacloban would enjoy pompous fiesta celebrations, with free food distributed to anyone who would go to the now defunct Nipa House,Manila based movie stars and recording artists would do free shows and grand parades would be organized, however the city became part of the twenty most poor provinces in the country. Now Tacloban is slowly beginning to take it's part in the growing economy of the Philippines.Night life in the city is such a bore for people who yearns for alternative clubs because we ai'nt got nothing .There are a lot of bar-b-q stalls and girlie bars, which gives it another monicker ,the flesh skewered city. The good thing about this city is the people. They are not as "urbanically calloused" as their counterparts in Cebu and Manila. The city is actually a town/city.Anyone can still smell fresh air and a cummunal attitude still exist. However it also has its own lows, traffic now happens in the morning, cars are parked on both sides of the streets in downtown, the local government seems bias against cutting edge artists and traces of elitism has become institutionalized(Only the rich wins in elections, venues for performances has rates that are beyond reach of common people even if these are owned by the government).Of course it's got a burgeoning underground music scene that is as diverse as anywhere in the world. Punk,Hip-hop,Ska,Gothic,Dance,Bubble gum crisis, emo and death metal afficionados continue to thrive in their own sub-cultures.This will be it for now .More updates are coming up....
